Rating year 2026/27 · rates, water and rubbish, both districts

Auckland or Waikato — which bill is smaller?

From 1 July 2026 both districts split the same way: council rates from the council, water from a separate entity — Watercare in Auckland, IAWAI in Waikato. Waikato also charges per rubbish bag at the shop; Auckland's collection is bundled into rates. One capital value, one water habit, one bin habit, run through both.

Water charges are the published 2026/27 figures. Watercare, from 1 July 2026: $355.90 a year fixed, $2.460 per kL for water, $4.280 per kL for wastewater, with wastewater volume billed at 78.5 per cent of metered water. IAWAI, from 1 July 2026: $594.02 fixed for water supply, $1,896.59 fixed for wastewater, $2.74 per kL consumed.

Rubbish bags are a real out-of-pocket cost in Waikato, bought at $3.00 each and used on top of the Northern District Rubbish and Recycling rate already in the table — that rate covers the collection run and recycling, not the bags themselves. Auckland's wheelie-bin service is fully funded through the Waste Management rates shown, so there's nothing extra to buy.

Council rate lines are estimates, marked est. They start from 2025/26 residential assessments for a Franklin property and a Pokeno property, then apply the increases each council announced for 2026/27: Auckland's 9.53 per cent on general rates, 2.2 per cent decrease on waste, 3.5 per cent on targeted rates; Waikato's 2.8 per cent on the general rate and 3.79 per cent elsewhere. Replace them with the real figures when the 2026/27 assessments arrive.

Local variation applies. Auckland's Franklin paths targeted rate is specific to that local board, and Waikato's Pokeno community centre rate to that township. Waste and bin charges assume a standard service in both districts.
